Description:
L-arginine is a chemical building block called "an amino acid." It is obtained from the diet and is necessary for the body to make proteins. L-arginine is found in red meat, poultry, fish, and dairy products. It can also be made in a laboratory and used as medicine.
Function:
L-arginine is one of the 20 amino acids that build up protein. L-arginine is one of the non-essential amino acids, meaning it can be synthesised in the body.
L-arginine is a precursor of nitric oxid and other metabolites. It is an important component of collagen, enzymes and hormones, skin and connective tissues. L-arginine plays important roles in the synthesis of various protein molecules; creatine and insuli being the most easily recognised. It may have antioxidant property and reduces accumulation of compounds such as ammoni and plasma lactate, by-products of physical exercise. It also inhibits platelet aggregation and has also been known to decrease blood pressure.
When consumed, L-arginine is converted to nitric oxid which aids in the relaxation of blood vessels. The effect is better blood circulation in the body and especially in the extremities; specifically the genitalia. For this reason L-arginine helps in stimulating and maintaining erection. Men with erectile dysfunction benefit especially from the intake of L-arginine rich foods or l-arginine supplement.
(1) Several small studies show that increasing intake of foods high in L-arginine may help ease symptoms, increase exercise tolerance, and improve blood vessel function in people with angina.
(2) L-arginine may benefit men with erectile dysfunction.
(3) L-arginine may improve cardiac performancein people with congestive heart failure.
(4) L-arginine may be effective for managing inflammation of the bladder, relieving leg cramping and weakness caused by blocked arteries (a condition known as intermittent claudication), and improving kidney function in kidney transplant patients taking cyclosporine.
